Andy Murray Live, presented by SSE has been announced as the 2017 winner of The SSE Live Awards for The SSE Hydro. The event came out on top after securing 40% of the public vote from an impressive selection of 81 events. This is the second time Andy Murray Live, presented by SSE has won the coveted award after also being crowned winner in 2016 – the first event to retain its title in the three year history of the awards.
Speaking of the win, Andy said:
“It’s great that Andy Murray Live has won this award for a second year running. I am very proud of the event and what it has achieved in the past couple of years, particularly the amount we raised for charity in 2017 and it’s always good to see this recognised by the fans as well.”
The exhibition match took place in November in front of a sold out audience of over 10,000 enthusiastic fans. It also more than doubled the previous years’ fundraising total with over £700,000 raised for UNICEF UK and local Glasgow charity Sunny-sid3up.
At the winning event, the Wimbledon, US Open and Olympic champion from Dunblane kicked off the night with a singles match against a kilted Rodger Federer. Andy was then joined by brother Jamie Murray for a doubles match against fellow tennis aces Mansour Bahrami and Tim Henman with Still Game’s very own Victor and Winston interrupting the match to show the Murray brothers how it’s done.
The top five acts with the most votes were in the 2017 SSE Live Awards for The SSE Hydro were:
1. Andy Murray Live, presented by SSE
2. Donny Osmond
3. Celebrate ‘67 Live
4. Queen & Adam Lambert
5. Take That
The eclectic mix within the top five alone displays the range of events on offer in Scotland’s leading entertainment venue including Queen & Adam Lambert who also featured in the top five at The SSE Arena, Wembley and The SSE Arena, Belfast.
This is a huge achievement for the 2015 SSE Live Awards winners as they are the only act to ever place in the top five across all three venues.
Home grown acts proved very popular with Celebrate 67, Celtic Football Club’s 50-year celebration of the Lisbon Lions, coming in third place after a passionate Twitter campaign from its supporters, including Sir Rod Stewart. Glasgow’s very own Still Game also won the hearts of comedy fans coming out top against all other comedy shows at the venue and placing within the top ten shows overall.
The SSE Live Awards have proved to be hugely popular with fans casting over one million votes across all three venues throughout January. By logging on to www.ssereward.com, fans could vote for their favourite event that took place throughout 2017 in the SSE-sponsored venues.
Colin Banks, Head of Sponsorship & Reward for SSE, said: “We have again been overwhelmed by the passion of fans in this year’s SSE Live Awards. The range of events across all three venues has never been wider and has shown that there really is something for everybody. Whether it was sharing videos and gifs on social media to back their favourite act, to encouraging other fans to join in, the events’ supporters really made their voices heard.”
“Congratulations to all involved with the Andy Murray Live, presented by SSE event that took place at The SSE Hydro in November, it really was an incredible night and it is a deserved winner.”
