With T in the Park 2016 just around the corner, festival organisers DF Concerts and founding partner Tennent’s Lager have added a fresh wave of hotly tipped acts to this year’s festival bill.
The Van T’s, Be Charlotte, HQFU, Making Monsters, Cherryshoes, Cabbage,Draper, The Night Café, The Mirror Trap, Isle, Lucia Fontaine, Womps, Man of Moon, Elle Watson, JNCTRE, Shiners, Matt Wills, Corey Bowen and Fenne Lilyhave today been announced for the BBC Introducing Stage, with just over two weeks to go until this year’s festival gets underway over 7th – 10th July 2016.
Having started writing songs at just seventeen years old, twin sisters Hannah (guitar, vocals) and Chloe Van Thompson (guitar, vocals) decided to start a band shortly after. Initially playing shows in and around Scotland as a duo, the twins recruited Joanne Forbes (bass) and Shaun Hood (drums) in an attempt to add more layers to an already impressive sound. As a result The Van T’s were born, complete with a sunny 50s jukebox style sound and a twist of a cathartic 90s grunge thrown in for good measure, captivating both fans and music aficionados alike.
From Dundee, Be Charlotte, features singer songwriter Charlotte Brimmer who also raps, beatboxes and has even helped to invent her own musical instruments. Be Charlotte has had support from Huw Stephens and this summer she makes her T in the Park debut.
HQFU is Glasgow-based artist Sarah J Stanley. Having toured the Scottish folk circuit for a number of years, she has now turned her talents to production and electronic music. She’s been supported by BBC Scotland with a session on Vic Galloway’s show earlier this year. After gigging around the UK this year, the multi-instrumentalist makes her T in the Park debut on Saturday 9th July.
Derry-based four piece Making Monsters have spent the last three years relentlessly touring the UK and Ireland, finishing a full UK tour with Fightstar and Arcane Roots in October last year. The first single from their latest record, Better received an exclusive premiere by Daniel P. Carter on BBC Radio 1’s Rock Show and subsequently the band were listed as BBC Introducing’s ‘Tip of the Week’.
Fronted by the mesmerising El-Jay, CherryShoes make a hypnotic brand of dark pop noir. They’ve performed sets at Latitude and are currently recording their first album. Their track Ride On has been played on BBC Radio 6 Music and last year they had a live set for BBC Introducing Hereford and Worcester.
Cabbage are a Manchester–based five-piece band with a neo post-punk sound. They have just released their debut single Kevin as featured on their recently released 5 track EP Le Chou. They’ve been supported by BBC Manchester and 6 Music and were featured on the Mark Radcliffe Recommends Day playlist.
Draper is a French-born British producer with a unique melodic electronic style. As well as his own music, Draper has worked many high profile remixes including Twin Atlantic, Passion Pit and Ellie Goulding. He has been supported by BBC Introducing Kent and MistaJam on 1Xtra.
The Night Café are four lads from South Liverpool; Sean Martin, Josh Higgins, Arran O’Connell and Carl Dillon. With support from BBC Introducing Merseyside they’ve been played on Radio 1 where Huw Stephens is a fan. With new music on the horizon The Night Café are set to make a big impression in 2016.
Two years ago Dundee based band The Mirror Trap were Scotland’s best kept secret. The 5-piece rock band met at music college and started writing and releasing music almost immediately, leading to considerable attention north of the border and much talked about appearances at T in the Park and beyond.
Isle are multi-medium musicians based in the stark Scottish Borders. Comprising of producer Liam John Rutherford and drummer Ben Singer, Isle are avid self-producers who partner audio and visuals to create an all-encompassing experience. Emotion-fuelled precision meets epic methodical drums to create raw alt-pop that punches and pulls.
The spirit of the Bowery is alive and well in the music of Lucia Fontaine. Patti Smith, The Ronettes and Richard Hell are the touchstones that fuel her, the artists that changed how she thought about music. Still only 19, Lucia takes these influences, alongside more contemporary acts like The Kills, The Vaccines and The Ravonettes then puts them through the grinder to create her own thing, one that perfectly balances abrasive riffs with big hooks, with the result being timeless tracks that sound as good in a dingy, late-night basement bar as they do on radio.
Womps are a post-punk duo comprised of Ewan Grant and Owen Wicksteed. Wompsreside in Glasgow and since their inception in 2015, have released their debut album Our Fertile Forever. The band has received support from Vic Galloway on BBC Scotland and have played across Europe including performing at Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
Man of Moon are a two-piece rock band from Edinburgh. They’ve supported the likes of We Were Promised Jetpacks, Phantom Band and The Subways and have fans in Lauren Laverne, Vic Galloway and Huw Stephens. They’re playing at various festivals this summer including T in the Park next month and have an upcoming UK tour starting in August.
From Sevenoaks in Kent, Elle Watson is a singer songwriter. Her latest single Losing Any Sleep was BBC Introducing Kent’s Record of the Week back in April. She’s working in the studio and making new music for 2016 and will perform at T in the Park on Sunday 10th July.
JNCTRE is duo George and Dan, who are based in the Midlands. With an electronic soul sound, they’ve been supported by BBC Introducing Stoke and have released their debut EP None of Us Are New.
Shiners are an upcoming band with a brit-pop lively sound. 2015 saw the band support the likes of DMA’s, Nothing But Thieves and The Bohicas as well as receiving great radio airplay from the likes of BBC 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq, BBC Introducing Norfolk and BBC Introducing In London with Gary Crowley. Their most recent single 19 Again is out now.
Matt Wills is a 22 year old self-taught guitarist from Kent now living in West London. He spent 2015 writing and touring alongside Halsey. Matt is heavily influenced by singer songwriters such as Ben Howard and Ed Sheeran as well as bands like The 1975 and the Kooks. His EP Hurricane has recently been released and he ha gained support from BBC Introducing London, Monki and Charlie Sloth.
Corey Bowen is a 19-year-old singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Middlesbrough, who says she’s less influenced by other artists and more by what’s going on around her. She’s had airplay from the likes of BBC Introducing in the North East, BBC Introducing in Oxford and from Huw Stephens.
Fenne Lily spent much of her time writing songs and honing both instrumental and lyrical skill as a child. Based in Bristol she has embraced the music scene with her folk-tinged sound. She’s supported the likes of KT Tunstall, Eaves and Palace. Her debut single Top to Toe has found favour with Lauren Laverne and she has been on tour across the UK this year.
