Castle Concerts are delighted to announce that one of Scotland’s most iconic bands, WET WET WET, will take to the stage at Edinburgh Castle on Sat 15th July to celebrate 30yrs of their classic debut album Popped In Souled Out.
Mark Mackie, director of Castle Concerts said: “It is with great delight we are able to announce today that pop sensations Wet Wet Wet will be the fourth act to play Edinburgh Castle this July. Its only taken us 25 years to get the band to come back and play this truly unique venue.Over the years, Edinburgh Castle has played host to many international stars such as Rod Stewart, Blondie, Elton John, The Proclaimers, Leonard Cohen, Stereophonics, Sir Tom Jones and Pink. Wet Wet Wet join Emeli Sande, Olly Murs and Deacon Blue at this world-renowned venue this year.”
Bursting onto the scene in 1987, Wet Wet Wet are undoubtedly a musical phenomenon. With an incredible back catalogue of songs including three UK No.1’s – ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’; ‘Goodnight Girl’; and ‘Love Is All Around’, the Glasgow lads have made an incredible impact with their music over the years, making them one of the most successful bands in British pop history.
Graeme Clark said: “We’re coming back to the Capital to celebrate the anniversary of our Popped In Souled Out album and to do it on this scale at Edinburgh Castle some 30 years after its release is incredible.”
Having sold in excess of 15 million singles and albums to date, featured in the UK official singles and album charts for over an immense 500 weeks, the band (Graeme Clark, Tommy Cunningham, Neil Mitchell, and Marti Pellow) have played to more than four million people in dozens of countries around the world.
Tommy Cunningham said: “It’s going to be some night! Playing live is what we love doing most and you never know, there might even be the odd wee splash of tartan just like there was last time!”
Having formed in 1982, the band’s first single ‘Wishing I Was Lucky’ was released in 1987 which quickly entered the charts, starting a phenomenal run of 27 Top 40 hits. The debut album ‘Popped in Souled Out’ followed and it too burst into the charts hitting No.1. The singles and albums flowed with their recording success being punctuated by a string of awards worldwide.
Neil Mitchell said: “To get to play those classic pop songs in such an iconic venue will make it an amazing day for us and the fans.”
Wet Wet Wet have rightfully earned the reputation of one of the U.K.’s finest live bands. They set a record by playing ten sold out shows at Glasgow’s SECC in 1995, when they were officially the most popular live act in the UK – even out-selling the Rolling Stones who were also on tour that year. Their most ‘2016 Big Picture Tour’ was an extensive 17-date arena tour that culminated in a sold out show at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow. The tour reached as far south as Plymouth and as far north as Inverness whilst covering all of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland, giving fans all over the country the chance to see the band live.
Marti Pellow said: “It was a major career highlight when we took to the stage at Edinburgh Castle some 25 years ago. We are honoured to be asked back and it is sure to be a special moment when we take to the stage again.”
‘Popped In Souled Out’ is being re-released as a 5 disk super deluxe edition that includes unreleased and rare material along with many extras. The band will be performing tracks from their classic debut at Edinburgh Castle as well as their greatest hits from over the past three decades.
Nick Finnigan, Executive Manager of Edinburgh Castle said: “Wet, Wet, Wet are one of the most successful Scottish acts of the last 30 years, so it’s exciting to have them as part of our forthcoming Castle Concerts Programme. “We’re all looking forward to welcoming the band back to Edinburgh Castle for what’s sure to be a wonderful show.”
