A sun-drenched TRNSMT Festival opened the Glasgow Green gates to thousands of music fans today as Glasgow Green played host to some of the world’s biggest acts and a SOLD OUT crowd. Stormzy, Gerry Cinnamon, Example, Years & Years, AJ Tracey, The Big Moon, Inhaler, Chlobocop and more delivered an incredible festival today that even featured a hugely surprising cover of Lewis Capaldi from closing act Stormzy.

Opening the Main Stage on Day 1 was American pop act Gus Dapperton who treated early arrivals to an eclectic array of material from his critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Where the Polly People Go To Read’.

Mabel and Aminé made their Scottish festival debuts across the afternoon and got the party started before grime star AJ Tracey proved why he is one of the hottest artists in the UK with a hugely energetic set that had the crowd bouncing. Playing his highly anticipated new wave grime classic ‘Thiago Silva’, the star had the crowd chanting the PSG footballer’s name throughout the set.

A massive sold-out crowd enjoyed a singalong set with festival veterans Years & Years who put on an enthralling display starting with their tune ‘Sanctify’, confetti canons and all, absolutely delighting the Glasgow Green crowd. With a number of hits to their name, frontman Olly Alexander had the whole crowd in the palm of his hands as he danced along the stage with a rousing rendition of their smash hit ‘Desire’.
Always a performer to use his platform for spreading positivity throughout the audience, Olly Alexander recalled the band’s earlier days in Glasgow saying, “Remember when we played King Tut’s? This has been quite a journey!” Ending what is sure to be one of the funnest sets of the weekend, Olly said goodbye to TRNSMT with “We love you Scotland, we love you Glasgow” and it’s safe to say – the feeling is mutual.

As the sold-out crowd assembled in their masses around the Main Stage, it was time for Gerry Cinnamon’s hugely anticipated set. He may have played at festivals around the world, however there’s no crowd like a home crowd and as the fans erupted in adoring roars, we witnessed a performance that will quite simply be hard to beat.  Making his third appearance at the festival in as many years  with chants of ‘Gerry Cinnamon’ rippling through the crowd before he’d even set foot on stage – incredible scenes ensued as a champion of TRNSMT Festival took to the Main Stage just before Stormzy. Having just announced two Scottish Arena dates this morning and performing to tens of thousands of fans who were lapping up his set, he led mass singalongs of crowd favourites like ‘Belter’, ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Kampfire Vampire’, plus new song ‘Canter’, Gerry Cinnamon confirmed his legendary status as “the people’s poet” today. Dedicating Undoubtedly his biggest show to date, the rise of Gerry Cinnamonknows no bounds.

Gerry Cinnamon said: “What’s happening TRNSMT? It’ll take more than a broken guitar to stop us – are yous up for the best weekend ever?”

Meanwhile, the King Tut’s Stage Powered by Utilita Energy was opened by Scottish-based Ghanaian artist Kobi Onyame who is sure to have won over many new fans with his formidable performance. Festival-goers were spoilt for choice with a vast array of up and coming talent on display on the stage including MIST, Mahalia, Jimothy, The Big Moon and more. It was left to pop veteran Example to bring the stage to a close though with a thrilling set that pulled massive tunes from his back catalogue.
A brand-new addition to TRNSMT Festival, the Queen Tut’s Stage featured an incredible atmosphere from the first to last performer with the Glasgow crowd showing up to support the new music stage. With female acts in every outfit, the Queen Tut’s Stage is an incredible exciting element of TRNSMT Festivalas organisers DF Concerts look to address the industry’s gender play gap over time. Today, Scarlett Randle became the first act to ever play the stage, going down in the festival’s history, even playing an outstanding cover of ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ saying. The stage featured some of the hottest under the radar acts the country has to offer including Chlobocop, who is sure to blow up the rap scene in months to come. Cara Rose and Carly Connor both brought their incredible vocals to the stage, followed by hot new outfit LUNIR and closed with a huge set from Lauren Spiteri. The Scottish singer-songwriter played her first ever festival today on the Queen Tut’s Stage and we’re sure it will be one to remember as she gave a shout-out to her mum, asking her to give everyone a wave. Lauren signed off saying “Massive thanks to you guys for coming to listen and a massive thanks to Geoff Ellis and TRNSMT for asking me to play this song” before launching into ‘Live Like You’.
Stormzy had fans in a frenzy earlier as he posted his travel woes on social media. Whispers spread across the site that the closing act might not make it, but TRNSMT Festival pulled out all the stops to get the superstar to Glasgow Green – even a police escort, which he documented on Instagram. Fresh from a triumphant display at Glastonbury last month, the grime star had the sold out crowd bouncing from the very off with massive tune ‘Know Me From’. Radiating a truly infectious energy, Stormzy lapped up the adoring Glasgow crowd, sending fans into a frenzy with ‘Shape Of You’ and his recent Number One single ‘Vossi Bop’, with every word sang back to him. For one of the most memorable moments of an incredible day, the rapper then took on Scotland’s very own Lewis Capaldi’s Number One hit ‘Someone You Loved’. An unexpected surprise and a truly outstanding moment in a jam-packed day of music, the cover went down a storm, unsurprisingly, with the TRNSMT crowd joining him to sing every single word.

Stormzy heaped praise on local boy Lewis saying, “I think he’s a legend, I think he’s a G and a hometown hero of yours. I love to get in the car and listen to this – it’s very dear to my heart.” Over to you Lewis…

With a new album said to be on the way, Stormzy proved exactly why he was worthy of his closing slot by delivering one of the most iconic TRNSMT sets of the past three years.
Ending on a high with ‘Blinded By Your Grace, Pt.2’ and straight into ‘Big For Your Boots’, it was a truly triumphant end to Day 1 of TRNSMT 2019. Featuring one of its most eclectic line-ups to date, from chart-topping heavyweights to some of the country’s most thrilling up and coming stars, it was a hugely successful first day for Scotland’s largest music festival.

Elsewhere across the site, festival goers had plenty of music to choose from including tune after tune from DJs on the Smirnoff Bar and Utilita Power Treedecks.

Festival Director, Geoff Ellis said: “Today has been full of good-feeling and singalongs across the site with the best audience in the world in fine voice. Inhaler and Mabel getting things underway on the Main Stage; Cassia and Example lighting up the King Tut’s Stage; and Glasgow’s own Lauren Spiteri closing the Queen Tut’s Stage were all highlights.

“It’s incredible to see how far Gerry Cinnamon has come in the past three years with the sold-out TRNSMT crowd signing along to every word during his Main Stage set. To top it all off Stormzy closed the first day of TRNSMT 2019 with a simply mind-blowing performance. We’re looking at an artist at the top of his game, and he’s set the bar at an all time high ahead of the weekend.”
