Briefs, Underbelly 2012

Briefs slams together a beef-caked and disorderly line-up of Australia’s

award winning mischief-makers in a circus-infused variety show for the

not-so-faint hearted. Host Shivannah – love-child of the ringmaster and

bearded lady, leads a ragtag team of skilful buccaneers in a contortion

of vaudeville, burlesque, dance and clowning. Raw and savvy, a mix of

political conscience, theatrical rule-breaking with heaps of clever

parody and good old fashioned entertainment.

Tom Thum, Underbelly 2012

Take a sonic journey into the mind and overworked vocal chords of

Australia’s most prolific multi-vocalist – Tom Thum, Beatbox addict and

star of Tom Tom Crew. Armed with just a microphone, Thum pushes the

limits of the human voice to create a mind blowing soundscape of

impossible beats, phenomenal sounds and an entire big band’s worth of

instruments, for his highly anticipated, solo debut. Thum has done more

than most, from winning team battles at the inaugural Beatboxing World

Championships, to performing on New York’s Broadway, fronting sold out

shows in Sydney, London and Berlin and even sharing a stage with hip-hop

legends such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash. WINNER OF THE

UNDERBELLY EDINBURGH AWARD – ADELAIDE FRINGE 2012.

Tumble Circus, Underbelly 2012

Adelaide 2012 Best Circus winners’ Edinburgh debut. No fanfare or sequins, just extraordinary skill from two acrobats on a lifelong adventure. ‘Very impressive’ **** (Adelaide Advertiser). ‘Ingenious’ (Sunday Times, Australia).

Paul Foot, Underbelly 2012

Deep within the sinking sands of the Perspex jungle of youth, in the forgotten

nebula of nothingness, comes an objet du desir – a trombone fruit.

Needless to say, it’s another warm year. ‘Masterful’ (Scotsman).

Anthony Rapp, Undebelly, 2012

A memoir of the early days of musical Rent – including the untimely passing of

Jonathan Larson. A stunning show about grief, hope, and triumph combining

original music and songs from Rent with a five-piece rock band.

Bourgeois and Maurice, Underbelly 2012

Twisting modern life into some of the catchiest, most peculiar pop songs
you’ll hear this year, award-winning cabaret duo Bourgeois & Maurice
bring their critically-acclaimed 4-piece band show to London
Wonderground for two nights only. An unrivalled mix of social
commentary, musical comedy and fashion so high you’ll wonder what you’ve
taken.

Felicity Ward, Underbelly 2012

What is it? Trying to wear tiny jackets over your spikes? Or every time you
get close to somebody, you might get hurt? Sound familiar? 2012 Nominee,
Best Show: Melbourne Comedy Fest and Adelaide Fringe.

Richard Herring, Underbelly 2012

Knob, d*ck, schmuck, the yoghurt-spitting sausage, the honourable member for

F*ckinghamshire, the pink lighthouse that wants you on its rocks, Spurt

Reynolds, Jack the Dripper, Rumpleforeskin… ‘Man’s answer to the Vagina

Monologues’ (Guardian).

Vocal Orchestra, Underbelly 2012

A spine-tingling hour of incredible musical entertainment celebrating
everyone’s favourite tunes using seven mouths, seven mics and no
instruments. You’ll be whooping, clapping and dancing all the way home.
‘Effervescent, energetic, audience-grabbing’ **** (Times).
